Objectives


The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has been specifically charged with the following responsibilities by the Nigerian Government:
1.
Exploring the solid mineral resource of the nation
 
2. Advising government on the formulation and execution of laws and regulations guiding the various stages of prospecting, quarrying and mining
   
3. Providing information and knowledge for enhancing investment in the solid minerals sector
   
4. Regulating the solid minerals sector
   
5.
Handling sale and consumption of solid minerals in the country, through the issuance of Permits, Licenses, Leases and Collection of rents, Fees and Royalties
 
6. Generating appropriate revenue for the Government
   
In summary, our objectives are as follows:
   
i. Design policies
   
ii.
Provide information and knowledge to enhance investment in the sector
   
iii. Regulate operations in the sector
   
iv. Generate appropriate revenue for the government



Future outlook

Nigeria can boast of having the highest concentration of varieties of solid minerals in Africa. And, the solid minerals sector holds the key to the successful implementation of the government’s efforts at diversifying the economy for sustainable development.

Our job is to assist in the exploitation of Nigeria’s solid minerals. In the process we hope to achieve the following for Nigeria:

• Import Substitution

• Local Infrastructural Development

• Increased Foreign Exchange Earnings

• Enhanced Tax Revenue

• Industrialization

• Poverty Alleviation
