The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria,
Ministry of Mines and Steel Development Chapter has
organised a one- day sensitization seminar for staffers of
the Ministry in Abuja.
While welcoming the staff to the seminar, the
chairman of the Association in the Ministry, Comrade
Victor Ihebunike said that the essence of organising
the seminar was to inform the staff on the
operations of the Ministry, Labour Reforms and Laws
in the country.
Comrade Ihebunike added that with a sound background
knowledge on the Ministry and its parastatals and
Nigerian Labour Reforms and Laws the staff will be
better equipped to serve the nation and members of
the public efficiently and effectively and enjoy
their rights and privileges.
Two Papers were presented at the seminar : “An
overview of the Ministry of Mines and Steel
Development,’’ Labour Reforms and Laws in Nigeria.’’
Mr. Iche A. Kalu, an Assistant Director in the
Ministry of Mines and Steel Development who
delivered the paper on an overview on the Ministry
said that the Ministry of Mines and Steel
Development had changed in name and functions from
the time of establishment to date as: Ministry of
Mines, Ministry of Power and Steel, Ministry of
Solid Minerals and now Ministry of Mines and Steel
Development.
Mr. Kalu disclosed that presently, the Ministry
administers and regulates operations in the Mines and
Steel sector of Nigeria’s economy.
He also said that the Ministry is in charge of the
Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited and the National Iron-
Ore Mining Company, Itakpe both in Kogi State.
In his presentation on ‘’Labour Reforms and Laws in
Nigeria,’’ Comrade Isaac Ojemhenke of the National
Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria
talked on formations of trade unions in Nigeria and
trade union reforms in Nigeria.
Comrade Ojemhenke said that trade union reforms
have resulted to creation of National Public Service
Negotiating Council 1, 2 and 3 in the Civil Service.
