The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has received the
Technical Audit Report on the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited
and National Iron Ore Mining Conpany, Itakpe.
The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Arc.
Musa Mohammed Sada made the disclosure at the
National Assembly during an interactive session with
members of the House of Representatives Committee on
Steel.
Arc. Sada observed that it was necessary for the
Federal Government to carry out the technical audit
of the two entities in order to have a better
picture on how to forge ahead with the two
companies.
The Minister said that he had a sigh of relief on
receiving the Technical Audit Report.
He disclosed that a committee had been set up in
the Ministry to review the report with a view to
fashion out a working document for immediate,
intermediate and long term implementation at Ajaokuta
Steel Company Limited and the National Iron-Ore
Mining Company, Itakpe.
Sada reiterated that a vibrant Steel sector was the
backbone of Nigeria’s industrial and economic
development. He added that necessary efforts were
being made by the Federal Government to resuscitate
the sector.
He disclosed that the Ministry had also received
the business plan of the Interim Management
Committee of the two companies on the expenditure
of the #650 million approved for re-operationalising
them and was already looking into it.
The Minister said that the management of the
Ministry was having regular interactive sessions with
the labour union representatives of the two
companies on the way forward.
He disclosed that arrangements had been finalised to
commence the payment of the outstanding salaries and
allowances of the staffers of the two companies
from January to April, 2010.
Sada said that after the payment of the outstanding
salaries and allowances he would visit the two
companies to see the situation of things on ground.
The Minister thanked the Chairman and his committee
members for the interactive session and assured them
of the Ministry’s cooperation and support in
resuscitating Nigeria’s Steel sector.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the House of
Representatives Committee on Steel, Hon. Aminu Shehu
Shagari said that the essence of the interactive
session was for exchange of ideas on how Nigeria’s
Steel sector could be revitalised for the
industrial and economic development of the country.
Hon. Shagari observed that if the Steel sector was
resuscitated, it would create employment opportunities
for many idle Nigerians .
The Committee Chairman noted that previous
administrations ignored the Steel sector to the
nation’s peril.
Consequently, he advised the Minister to do all he
could to revitalise the Steel sector.
Hon. Shagari assured the Minister of the Committee
members readiness to partner with the Ministry for
the development of Nigeria’s Steel sector.
The Committee Chairman implored the Minister to
prevail on the President of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to visit Ajaokuta
Steel Company Limited and the National Iron-Ore
Mining Company, Itakpe to see things for himself. |
