The Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI)

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) was announced by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, September 2002.

Its aim is to increase transparency over payments by companies to governments and government-linked entities, as well as transparency over revenues by those host country governments.

The Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) is the Nigerian subset of this global initiative. Launched in February 2004 by President Olusegun Obasanjo, NEITI seeks to promote transparency in the Nigerian oil and gas industry for the benefit of the Nigerian people.

NEITI was championed by Obiageli Ezekwesili, now the Minister of Education.
