Overview
Introduction
The Nigerian extractive industry consists of 3 major sub-sectors:
1 Oil sector
2 Gas sector
3 Solid minerals
|
|
The oil and gas sector have made significant progress in Nigeria's developing economy while the
solid minerals sector (with about 34 different categories of minerals) is currently being fully developed.
Prior to the emergence of the petroleum industry, solid minerals was one of the key sectors of Nigeria’s economy, largely sustaining the economy before the nation was afflicted with the Dutch Disease of mono-product dependency spanning about four decades.
Until the 1960s, coal and tin were mined in places like Jos and exported on a large scale but poor management by state-owned enterprises led to a decline in existing operations. |
